We’re excited to announce Earth Conservancy has recieved a $5,000 grant from the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) to plant 50 trees along Espy Run. This project will enhance the riparian buffer along the restored stream, further strengthening its ecological benefits and resilience.

Espy Run, a tributary of Nanticoke Creek, underwent a major restoration completed in December 2022 to repair damage from legacy coal mining. This new funding will allow us to improve the stream buffer by planting native trees to stabilize streambanks, filter pollutants, reduce erosion, and provide wildlife habitat.

This grant comes from SRBC’s Stream & Watershed Enhancement Grant Program, which supports projects that protect and restore waterways throughout the Susquehanna River Basin. The tree planting will also help replace vegetation lost to drought and reinforce previous restoration efforts, ensuring long-term success.

We appreciate SRBC’s support and the ongoing collaboration with partners like the Luzerne Conservation District in our shared mission to restore and protect local waterways. Espy Run’s restoration is part of a broader effort to revitalize lands impacted by past mining activity and improve water quality in the Lower South Valley. Planting is expected to begin soon, and we look forward to sharing updates along the way!
