Earth Conservancy wins Environmental Partnership Award

EC received the 2011 Environmental Partnership Award from the Northeastern Pennsylvania Environmental Partners for our Huber III Reclamation Project. The project, which cleaned up an 82 acre site, represents one of EC’s largest, costliest and most important projects. The site sits at an entrance to Hanover Industrial Estates and is intended to be used for economic development. The project brought together several entities that together facilitated its completion.  Initial funding for the project was provided through the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Business in Our Sites Program and EC.  EC also partnered with Northampton Generating Company to remove culm that could serve to generate electricity.  This culm had once been considered waste material but now, with technological advances, can be used to create electricity in a process called co-generation.

The WNEP TV Power to Save September special featured a partnership between Earth Conservancy and Pennsylvania American Water Company to repurpose residual material created during water treatment processing and combine it with Earth Conservancy’s compost, made at its leaf and yard waste composting facility, to create a nutrient rich compost for use in some of Earth Conservancy’s reclamation Projects.  Click HERE to watch the program.

Boy Scout Troop No. 379 from Wapwallopen, PA, United Church of Christ, took to the trails to help Earth Conservancy mark trails at the Mocanaqua Loop Trail System. The troop often hikes the 15 miles of trails throughout the system and ”blazed” the Brown trail as part of its environmental education program. The trail markers, or blazes, can be seen on the tree to the left of the group. Pictured front row, left to right: Colby Eisenhauer, Slade Stepanski, Anthony Galli. Penn State University School of Agriculture Annual Deans’ Tour

Earth Conservancy’s Silt Pond Reclamation Site was part of the annual Penn State University College of Agriculture Sciences leadership team tour on May 31.

The tour visited sites that had partnered with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) to improve a variety of environmental issues that impact water quality.  EC partnered with CBF to utilize a chicken manure-based compost at the silt pond site off Middle Road, Hanover Township. The material was mixed with EC’s own soils to create a nutrient rich substrate for seeding.

The site, completed in 2009, has been left as open space for passive recreation. Pictured above left: Mike Dziak, President/CEO Earth Conservancy, discusses the silt pond reclamation project. Pictured above right: Harry Campbell, CBF Pennsylvania Scientist Advocate, discusses the chicken manure-based compost project and the outcomes of the project.

Nanticoke Cub Scout Pack 415 Helps EC to Plant Trees

Nanticoke Cub Scout Pack 415 braved wet weather to help Earth Conservancy plant more than 50 White Pine and Norway Spruce at the Phase II Wetland Educational Site along Dundee Road in Hanover Township on April 23rd. Helping out were 14 scouts along with lots of family members.  The trees will help to stop erosion and water runoff.

Earth Conservancy Community Gardens

Each year  since 2000, Earth Conservancy has operated a community garden in Plymouth Township. The garden plots are provided to Luzerne County residents free of charge along with water at the site.

Area residents can sign up for a seasonal plot and grow fruits, vegetables and flowers for their own use.

Garden plots are typically available between May 15 and October 15, depending on weather conditions.

It’s a great way to meet other gardeners and grow your own produce.

To sign up for a seasonal plot or to get more information, call 823-3445.

2011 EPA National Brownfields Conference

Earth Conservancy participated in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2011 National Brownfields Conference in April 2011, which took place in Philadelphia, PA.

The conference provided Earth Conservancy an opportunity to showcase reclaimed Brownfield sites that are available for development at the Redevelopment Forum and to participate in panel discussions. EC President/CEO Mike Dziak attended the Economic Forum’s Pennsylvania state exhibit. While there he met with C. Alan Walker, Secretary, Department of Community and Economic Development; Scott Dunkelberger, Executive Director. Commonwealth Finance Authority; Denise Brinley, Deputy Secretary, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Community Revitalization and Local Government Support; and, Sherry Gallagher, US Environmental Protection Agency, Brownfields Coordinator.

EC Director of Public Affairs and Development Jacqueline Dickman participated as a panelist in a workshop called Brown to Green: The New Industry Standard, Reuse of Mine Scarred Lands.
